Star Wars Chess is a lackluster animated chess game similar to Interplay's Battle Chess. The SEGA CD version of the game, released a year later, is better known and better-sold than this rare PC version.
Each traditional chess piece (king, rook, pawn, and so on) is represented by a character from the Star Wars movies. In addition, when one piece captures another, the game zooms in to the board, and you are treated to a small battle animation. If you don't know how to play chess, don't expect Star Wars Chess to teach you. Not too worry, though-- the AI in the game is pretty bad, which more than makes up for the lack of tutorial mode.
The chess pieces are represented as follows:
If you get tired of playing with Star Wars characters, you can switch to a 2D mode with traditional pieces. As the review at Videogames.com makes clear: '...[when] it comes down to it, chess is chess, no matter what the pieces look like or what fancy animation accompanies it. But chess fans and Star Wars fans alike will probably be turned off by the awkward perspective of the chess board and the long load times that bog down gameplay. The animations themselves are rather violent and sort of creepy [e.g. R2-D2 gives Darth Vader laser shocks, Chewbacca sets Boba Fett on fire, etc], but if you turn them off, all you are left with is a slow, bare-bones computer chess game. A good alternative is to turn off the game altogether.'
Recommended only to fill up the collection of die-hard Star Wars fans who must own every Star Wars-related game on the planet (I'm looking at you here Sytass ;)).

When I downloaded this, it changed some LST files to .txt (RESCOURCE.LST.txt). All you have to do is delete the .txt extension, and voila, it should work.

I used to play this game a lot back in 1998. I use Windows 7, 64bit. It won't work on a 64bit architecture.
2 options to make it work....
1. Best Option. VMWare an install of a Windows 32 OS (XP, 2000 or Win98). Run the game in that environment.
2. DOSBox. Google the website. It works using DOSBox, but it is not like playing it in a Windows environment. The battle animations suck to watch in DOS. Motion is really bad. You need to left click and hit Enter on the piece then again on the square (both click and Enter) you want to move the piece to.
The latter means takes forever to play a game.
Shutch: Fantastic game. Too bad more like these were never developed. It was a diamond in the rough.

Awesome that this can be enjoyed still...I was the producer on this at Toolworks. The big selling feature was 72 unique animated capture sequences. We were trying to up Battle Chess at the time which had 36 sequnces (Blk takes Wht ____piece, and vice versa was the same) in our each was different. Good times!

It was originally developed and released by Interplay Entertainment for the Amiga in 1988 and subsequently on many other systems, including 3DO, Acorn Archimedes, Amiga CD32, Amiga CDTV, Apple IIGS, Apple IIe, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, FM Towns, NES, Mac OS, PC-98, Sharp X68000 and Windows 3.x. Gameplay
Since there are six types of pieces for each color, and a king cannot capture a king, there are 35 battle animations.[2] The rook, for example, turns into a rock monster and kills a pawn by smashing his head. There are some pop-culture homages; the knight versus knight animation references the black knight fight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail , and the king versus bishop fight pastiches the short battle between Indiana Jones and a swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The game can be also played in a 2D version with no animations, and the Amiga CDTV version features a fully voiced introduction describing the movements of the pieces for the benefit of beginners. Digitized sound is utilized in the DOS version for all battle sound effects and is played through the PC speaker, without the need for a sound card, using a technique akin to RealSound.
Battle Chess could be played against a human opponent (by hotseat, or by null modem or over a local area network in some ports) or against the computer's artificial intelligence (AI).[2] The game has an opening library from over 30,000 moves (which were not available for the Commodore 64 and Apple II versions).
Development
Battle Chess was the first title developed and published by Interplay Entertainment themselves after ending their relationship with Electronic Arts, besides Neuromancer. The game was featured in the 1992 film Knight Moves about a chess grandmaster who is accused of several murders.[3] Battle Chess producer and Interplay's founder Brian Fargo expressed his fondness for the game in a 2006 interview, although he added that he did not think there would be much of an audience for it today. An apocryphal story of the development was the invention of «The Duck» (an example of Parkinson's law of triviality): The producers of the game were known to demand changes to the game, presumably to make their mark on the finished product. To this end, one animator added a small duck around the queen piece, but made sure that the sprite would be easily removable. Come review, the producers, predictably, okayed everything but asked for the duck to be removed. Battle Chess for PC.
Reception
The Amiga version received favourable reviews from magazines due its comical battle sequences which were advanced (for the time) in terms of graphics, animation and sound. German game magazine ASM, however, criticized the weak chess AI.[13] In a review of the 3DO version, Electronic Gaming Monthly stated, 'If you are a chess fan, then you may want to check this title out.[9]'
Interplay won «Best Graphics Achievement In A Non-Graphics Product» from Software Publishers Association (later renamed to Software and Information Industry Association) for Battle Chess.[14] In 1996, Computer Gaming World ranked it as the 106th best game of all time for its 'funny, elaborate animated sequences and spectacular special effects.[15]'
Legacy
Sequels
A sequel titled Battle Chess II Chinese Chess was released in 1991, based on xiangqi, commonly known as «Chinese chess». The next year's Battle Chess 4000 spoofed science fiction movies and television series (such as a battle sequence involving the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey) and used a clay animation art style similar to Clayfighter.
Inspired games
Battle Chess also spawned a number of inspired games, such as Star Wars Chess, released by Software Toolworks in 1993,[16] Terminator 2: Judgment Day — Chess Wars, developed by Capstone Software and released by IntraCorp also in 1993,[17] and National Lampoon's Chess Maniac 5 Billion and 1. Another clone, War Chess was released by XS Games for the PlayStation 2 in 2005,[18] and was later ported to the PC by Big Fish Games and released online.[19]
One similar game, titled Battle vs. Chess, was developed by TopWare Interactive for «just about every platform».[20] However, Interplay filed and won an injunction for trademark infringement in 2010 and TopWare was prevented from releasing Battle vs Chess in the United States.[21] The District Court of California came into session and given that after two years of litigation, TopWare Interactive discharged their lawyer, resulting in Interplay winning the case by default. 3D Chess Game for Windows 10 is a chess game that takes not a lot of disk space. The 3D graphics have been carefully designed, giving the players a lot of zooms and swivel freedom. The game offers around 25 levels that you can play against bots, increasing difficulty with each level. Do keep in mind that there is no online playing mode as the game is downloadable and can be played without internet access. The game offers performance statistics after every round but the audio is quite unrealistic, and the game is better played on mute. Get it from the Windows Store. You can also check out another 3D Chess game there.
This interactive chess application is a great game to explore when you have no work in an office or are just trying to pass some time. Pick your difficulty level and see if you can beat the AI as it increases difficulty. You also have the option to undo your move if you make a mistake. Chess 2013 records the moves in the standard chess notation and lets you jump to any point in the game. The moves are automatically saved and loaded when you close and reopen the application. The development of the game is assessed in the Evaluation panel – positive values indicate White’s advantage, negative values indicate Black’s advantage. Download it from CNET – the download looks clean by the way!
If you want to explore the world of playing chess with multiple players online, whether on your network or across the world, Chess24 offers a great platform for you to do just that. Chess Time is one of the highest-rated chess game apps on Windows Store. It is available on both Windows 10 and Windows Phone. The best feature of this app is that you can play online with cross-platform users on even Android and iOS at the same time. You can invite friends in for a game or someone random. Your ranking and amount of points are determined by your win-loss ratio. If you enjoy Chess, this is a great way to play the game if you’re ever bored.
Another free online portal for playing chess is Lucas Chess. The game has 40 engines prepared to play from the start, and with very different levels, from 0 to 3300. This is purely played with the computer and you choose to either train, play with one engine or play with a combination of engines to challenge the best in you. There is also a special mode for young children getting into the game, wherein they will be able to begin their apprenticeship with special engines that know little more than moving the pieces, and this will enable them to win against the engines from the very beginning.
